About Exercise and Movement Science

The job options: As specialists in the application and theory of exercise and movement sciences in health, fitness, and illness prevention, graduates of the exercise and movement science program practice many different interesting health and fitness-related fields or businesses, including health promotion, adapted physical activity for special populations, recreation management and health and fitness business ventures.

Launching point to additional career paths: Many graduates use the degree in exercise and movement science as a starting point to pursuing other clinical certifications such as exercise specialist or personal trainer. Others pursue graduate work in exercise and movement science, physical therapy or athletic training. For more information on Exercise Science careers visit these profession-related websites:

The education: The exercise and movement science program at UVM is an academic major designed to provide students with in-depth study of the theory and application of movement sciences in health, fitness and illness prevention across many populations. Students can tailor their educational experiences to meet individual goals, including mentored practical and research experiences. Graduates of the UVM exercise and movement science program earn a bachelor's of science (B.S.) in exercise and movement science.

Admission Requirements

Requirements for admission are similar to those for all undergraduate degree students at UVM (see UVM undergraduate Admissions Criteria for details).

Selectivity and transfers into program: The Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science welcomes qualified transfer applications from within UVM and from other accredited colleges and universities. Selection of applicants to the Exercise and Movement Science (EXMS) program is competitive, and the opportunity to transfer into the major, even from within the university, is not assured. Admission of qualified transfer applicants will be dependent upon available seats within an appropriate class.

Current UVM students who wish to apply for transfer into the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science academic program (EXMS) must meet and be aware of the eligibility criteria and requirements. Read the complete policy for EXMS Transfers.

Additional fees: There are costs associated with being enrolled in the UVM Exercise and Movement Science program. These include but are not limited to: personal liability insurance, criminal background check, apparel to adhere to dress code(s), and travel to and from off-campus internships.

Academic Standards

Students in the exercise and movement science program must maintain a cumulative GPA 2.5 or better to remain in good standing. Additionally, students may receive no more than one grade of D or below in their major courses.
